mantou
I made Mantou over the weekend. If you don’t know what they are, well i shall tell you! They are a delicious steamed sweet bread from China. They also have them in Japan too.
They can be both sweet- red bean paste, or savoury- various meat or vegetable stuffings, although i think the stuffed ones are called Baozi! So i guess i made Baozi.
Here are some pictures…

Here is the first batch waiting to be steamed…
The dough is quite simple to make using plain flour, yeast sugar, salt and water. They don’t take too long to make either. I think they are going to be a main feature for our weekend breakfasts hehe :-)

Fresh from the steamer and cooling down…

** Inside the mantou. I stuffed them with a home made sweet bean paste.I want to make kurimu-pan (a custard filled bread bun) next. Which we ate all the time in Japan. Infact its maskingtape’s favourite bun of choice.
** The next day we enjoyed them from Sunday breakfast. I warmed the up in the oven with sugar sprinkled on the top until they were nice and golden. We had them with kiwi fruit and pomelo( which is my favourite citrus fruit)

Pomelos remind me of our trip in China as we tried them with a nice old granny in Yangshou we sat in her yard surrounded by orange trees and her grand children.
